Wutai Mountain



Wutai Scenic Area is a combination of natural landscapes, historical relics, ancient archeological art, Buddhism culture, folk customs, spending summer holiday and having a rest.

Wutai Mountain gets its name for five platforms which are encircled and stand in the east, the west, the south, the north and the middle, the five directions. It is a famous sacred mountain at home and broad, in the leading position of four famous Buddhism Mountains in China.

Wutai Mountain is with elegant and beautiful natural landscapes and magnificent views. Here mountains stand with mountains and is a strategically situated place. There are strange peaks, odd rocks, steep cliffs, beautiful caves, fresh springs, green ponds and trickles, which make people welter in their beauties.

There are five peaks in Wutai Mountain and the landscapes of the five peaks are respectively different.

East platform is called Wanghai Peak (looking-at-the-sea Peak); it gets its name from Wanghai Temple. In summer, you ascend a high pavilion to overlook at dawn, only seeing a vast sea of rising mists, wreathed clouds, rising sun and rays of sunshine, which is like appreciating sunrise on the sea.

West platform is called Guayue Peak and Falei Temple was built on the top of the platform. Overlooking from the west, you can see a chain of mountains and dense pine forests. When in the dead night of the clear and crisp days of autumn, the moon is in the sky, which is a fascinating view.

South platform is called Jingxiu Peak and Puji Temple was built by stones on the top of the platform. The wild flowers are in full blossom in the mountain, making people feel mellow.

North platform is called Yedou Peak and its top platform is 3058 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak of Wutai Mountain and the highest peak in North China. Overlooking here, you can see Heng Mountain which is called Beiyue (the mountain in the north), with a chain of mountains and peaks and a magnificent view.

The middle platform is called Cuiyan Peak and Yanjiao Temple is built on the top of the platform. There is a stone called “Longfan Stone”. In the sunlight, the green in Cuiyan Peak glows, the stone is like a dragon flying in the sky, hence it gets the name.

Besides, there are many ancient temples, colorful man-made scenic spots, well-preserved precious ancient architectures, sculptures and frescoes. There are also many ancient padogas from the Northern Wei Dynasty to today, such as, brick pagodas, wooden pagodas, stone pagodas, iron pagodas, jade pagodas, glazed pagodas, crystal pagodas as well as a rare Jingzi Pagoda. These rare pagodas and Buddhism temples make Wutai Mountain more beautiful and certify that Wutai Mountain is a famous Buddhism scared place. Here people will realize by accident that “ it really is a quiet place” and should forget those troubled things.

Wutai Mountain is the Buddhism rites of Wensu Bodhisattva, one of four famous Buddhism scared places. It is reported that the earliest Buddhism temples were built in the Eastern Han Dynasty and enlarged and repaired during successive dynasties to form a certain scale. Now there are 48 temples here and hundreds of monks and nuts. Wutai Mountain has a long history, splendid cultures, many ancient building complexes, precious historical relics and art treasures. And it is a treasure house of Chinese ancient architectures, sculptures and drawings. Nanchan Temple and Foguang Temple were built in the Tang Dynasty; magnificent Xiantong Temple was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty; Huayan Jingzi Pagoda and other hundreds of historical relics are well-known at home and abroad.
